Potala Palace

The massive Potala Palace is an architectural wonder – a magnificent structure with gold roof soaring more than 300 meter above the valley floor. The palace is visible for all the direction from miles around.

The Palace was built in 1645 – 1693 by Dalai Lama and then after, it has become the political and religious hub of Lhasa. The Palace has more than 1,000 rooms including living quarter of the Dalai Lamas where they lived and golden tombs when they died.

There are plethora of meticulously decorated chapels and shrines, fascinating halls and corridors with thousands of gilded statues of Tibet’s pantheon of Buddhas, Boddhisattvas, saints and demons.

Jokhang Temple

Located in the center of ancient Lhasa city, Jokhang temple is the holy seat of the Gelugpa (Yellow) Branch of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally built in 647 AD, it is the spiritual center of Tibet and holiest of all the Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims.

Barkhor Street

Barkhor Street (an ancient street) is the lively blend of bustling market, pilgrimage kora and ethnic melting pot. The street run clockwise about the sacred Jokhang Temple and remains busy, especially at dawn and dusk. Join the pilgrimage trip in Barkhor Street – it gives different vibes.

Drepung Monastery

A visit to Drepung Monastery is one of the most significant part of Tibet Lhasa city trip. Drepung Monastery is one of the “great three” Gelukpa monasteries, along with Sera Monastery and Ganden Monastery. Built in 1416, the monastery used to be home to more than 10,000 monks and it played important role in Tibetan Buddhism.

The monastery is located in Gambo Utse Mountain and it comprise great complex of white building dotted around the hillside.

Sera Monastery

Sera Monastery, one of the three great temple, together with Drepung Monastery and Ganden Monastery, is the symbol of Gelug temples, located on the northern suburb of Lhasa. The monastery was built in 1419 and houses great assembly hall, three colleges and the dwelling on the eastern side. Set at the backdrop of mountains, Sera Monastery is the repository of ancient relics, arts, scriptures and history. Here the debate of monks is open to public to enjoy the charm of Buddhism and find some enlightenment.

Day 01: Arrival in Lhasa

Fly to Lhasa or arrive in Lhasa by train. Our representative will receive you and transfer you to hotel in Lhasa. On way, you can admire the incredible highland view along with the Yarlong Tsangpo river (the longest river in Tibet and highest river in the world with an average elevation of 4,000m), originated from the melt of Jiemayangzong Glacier of northern Himalayan range.

Day 02: Lhasa tour – Explore Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street (B, D)

Today, we visit the Potala Palace, the winter palace of Dalai Lama. It is located on the red hill, a good view point in Lhasa. It remains constantly bustling with religious worshippers. The palace was put into use since the 7th century by the 33rd great king of Tibet. The glided burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and meditation cave of 33rd great king of Tibet are the most valuable collection of Potala Palace.

In the afternoon, we visit the renowned Jokhang Temple which offers the first glimpse of devout Tibetans. Here we will see the glistering statue of Sakyamuni which is considered as the Tibetan Buddhism’s rarity. You can perceive many pilgrims making prostrating in front of the Temple.

Next, we stroll around the ancient Barkhor Street to witness ancient art and architecture. Beside that, we can taste local dishes and tea with locals in tea house.

If time permits, we can visit the Tibetan Handicraft art or Tibetan Traditional Medicine center. For more experience, you can enjoy the traditional Tibetan culture show in the evening (fee USD 60).

Day 03: Lhasa Tour – Explore Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery (B)

After breakfast, we proceed to visit the Drepung Monastery, one of the great three Gelug Monasteries of Tibet, founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choge. Jamyang Choge is one of the main Tsongkhapa’s disciples. We also visit the biggest monastery Kitchen inside the monastery and explore the Buddhist Sculpture Carving workshop near Drepung.

In the Afternoon, we head for paying homage to Sera Monastery, another one of the great three Gelung monasteries in Tibet. We witness the Monks debate held at around 3 – 5 PM in the noon. Moreover, we make a short visit to the Tibetan religious scripture printing house, inside the monastery where we can witness three sand Mandalas and colorful Rock Painting of Lord Buddha.
