Bhutan is famous for its Tshechus, or festivals that are held annually on the date’s chosen by the lamas following the Buddhist lunar calendar. The festivals are celebrated on the tenth day of the lunar month, in the great honor of Guru Rinpoche, the Indian tantric who taught Buddhist Dharma to the Bhutanese from Tibet in the 8th century, because it the tenth day of lunar calendar that he is said to have performed his great deeds of teaching. Each locality performs their festival in certain time of year. The performing of function of social bonding among the people of remote and spread-out villages is also held in Tsechus. Large markets also congregate at the fair locations, heading toward brisk commerce. It is also the time we can see the Villagers from far and near congregating – sometimes walking from far for days and weeks just to participate the festivals. The festivals are usually preceded by the dances performed by monks and the ritual and playing the traditional instruments. The dances are usually performed in open courtyard of local Dzong, or Monastery .These dance are attended by the local people who come to receive the blessing conferred upon the on lookers. This is a great time to be in the Dragons Kingdom.
