Lhasa City

Before 7th century the capital city of Lhasa was Yarlung city. But that was before the King Songtsen Transferred his capital from Yarlung to the "holy city" Lhasa.  There is a myth how this city had its name Lhasa. The Jokhang which happens to be the religious centre of Tibetan people was build on a lake. It required a huge amount of soil to fill the lake; all these soils were carried by sheep. In Tibetan language sheep is known as 'Ra' and earth i.e. soil is known as 'Sa'. Because of this place build on earth carried by sheep people started calling the city Ra-Sa. Meaning city build by soil carried by sheep. With the time the name Ra-Sa became Lhasa.
